A Marie maiden being carried along the Via Giuseppe Garibalde on route to St Mark's Square, as part of the Festa delle Marie, one of the festivals at the start of the Venice Carnival. 12 girls are chosen to have the great honour of being a Marie where they are carried through the streets in one of the Venice's oldest traditions, the festival is linked to the religious ceremony of the purification of Mary. Each year the carnival takes place just before Lent ending on Shove Tuesday.
