A Victorian bridge archway, built in 1862 near Kirkby Stephen was filled in with 1, 644 tonnes of gravel and concrete, by the government agency, National Highways, last year costing £124, 000. Referred to as "Public Vandalism" by campaigners and a public outcry has reversed the decision and National Highways will be forced to remove the rubble and restore the historic archway.
